Corpus Christi illustrates a desert journey marked by fatigue and discouragement, because in the inhospitable desert, life could fail at any moment, yet not with God overlooking the needs of his people.
“Remember the journey,” whispers the first reading. Remember! For forgetfulness is the root of all evil. Remember the desert and the mountain, the wind on the trails, the soul weary when a day in the desert seemed like years.
And then the manna that fell suddenly, when you no longer expected it, or the water coming out from a rock, feeling loved by the melody of God’s care. Sudden glimpses opened up to tell you that you are not alone, that you are not lost among the desert dunes; this is an exercise to get rid of the slave in the heart, and let the Son and Daughter of God bloom.
Some hardships in our lives may feel endless, like a desert, but there is always the day of the Lord when His provision returns. Lord, grant us that bread always! Break my hectic routine with Your heavenly meal: the body and blood of Your Son.
Your Son, who came from heaven, like heavenly bread, not to take but always to give himself as a source of true life; “behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins.”
True bread from heaven nourishes the soul and takes away our sins; My Lord, give us this bread always (John 6:34).
