Each year Catholic Charities sponsors the Matthew 25 Award Mass and Banquet. This annual event links the mission of Catholic Charities with the great work being done at local parishes. At the same time, it raises needed funds for Catholic Charities allowing them to continue their charitable work.

Each year St. James has the opportunity to recognize a member of the parish who exemplifies the Gospel Message of Matthew 25. This year our St. James-St. Leo Parish nominates Jan Nelteas the recipient of this honorable award.

For many years, Jan has handled the communications for St. James Mission Circle — a charity devoted to helping people in need. Jan writes the newsletters, flyers, donation letters, and helps put out the e-blasts. She takes the pictures at all the Mission Circle events, does the photo boards, produces their website, Facebook page, and creates videos for their fundraisers.

Jan also helps with all the charity’s events — like the Christmas Party at the girls’ home Mission Circle supports in Tijuana. She organizes an outing for the kids in the fall and helps stage a fashion show at the home in the spring. Locally, she helps promote dinners for the homeless and a shoe distribution for 1300 needy kids in Oceanside.

Jan is also active in community affairs. Acting as co-chair of a committee for The Village Garden Club of La Jolla, she has helped plant over 2,000 Jacaranda trees in public places. She also does the programs for other community events the club sponsors.

Finally, through her husband’s connections, Jan helps with some Del Mar Rotary projects as well as those for the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito in North County.
