A Note from the Pastor – Feb 13

Jesus introduces a transformative perspective, emphasizing that it’s not just about following rules but embodying God’s ideal with compassion. He addresses violence, desire, and lies, stating that anger at a brother equates to murder, urging us to examine our inner motives behind actions.

The apostle John makes an enormous statement: “Whoever does not love his brother is a murderer” (1 Jn 3:15). Those who do not love, have the seed of decay. Lack of love is not only my slow death, but it becomes an incubator of derision of self, and additionally of our brethren. Jesus reveals the first three steps towards death: anger, insult, contempt; all of them kill the heart.

But calling someone “mad” doesn’t kill anyone; yet it leads downhill, as if falling into a burning dumpsite called Gehenna. Have you experienced ill sentiments that keep popping back? That’s the dumpsite called Gehenna growing.

Jesus warns that despising and insulting others devalues your life, akin to diminishing it like rubbish. This is an inappropriate punishment; it corrupts your humanity. These Gospel teachings are radical yet deeply human, focusing on the heart and life. Jesus advises, “Protect your heart to steer clear of the negative baggage of the past.”

Avoid swearing and always be truthful; integrity eliminates the need for oaths. Take care of your heart, as it is the source of life. “My Lord: Guard this fragile heart, splendid gift that knows and longs for heaven.”
