Among the witnesses to Christmas is Joseph, a man with calloused hands and a kind heart. He is silent yet courageous, balancing practicality with dreams. His hopes reflect God’s will, and his home is ready as he prepares to marry Mary, the love of his life. Their story embodies true love.
Mary discovers she’s pregnant, and Joseph considers ending their relationship. Despite feeling betrayed, he wants to protect her and believes it’s best to part ways.
But Joseph is dissatisfied with the decision he has made. He struggles with an emotional and spiritual conflict: on the one hand, the obligation to report the sin, and on the other, the protection of the woman he loves. He is torn between his love for the law of Moses, and his love for the girl from Nazareth. Then a second unexpected, beautiful, and surprising event occurs.
Joseph has a dream from God, who doesn’t hinder him from the effort and freedom, yet, God clarifies: Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. You already want to take her with you, do not be afraid to love her, those who love do not err.
God doesn’t magically solve our problems or save us from conflicts. Instead, he is present in our struggles, working with our minds and hearts through intelligence, empathy, and holiness.
The text emphasizes the importance of walking alongside others to protect lives. Despite being poor, Mary and Joseph were rich in love, which is essential to knowing God.
