Jesus is out on the road, his favorite place to see God at work when anyone crosses his path or waits for him at the route’s turn. Jesus is a master who teaches the art of encounter.
Behold, an unidentified person rushing to meet him as if hurrying to catch a breath. “Good Master,” he says, “How can I achieve everlasting life?” He seeks life from the Eternal, and he desires it now.
Jesus responds by listing five commandments and a precept, which are not about God but about respecting people; they are about how belief and love define you. These commandments convey life, the life of God, which is love.
He responded, “Master, I’ve already known and accomplished them and want more.” Though Jesus loves his “Eternity-Longing.” Jesus also seeks efficiency and a perseverant connection with God.
So Jesus, instead of adding more duties, decides to wake him up and act: “One thing you lack, use your heart and go, sell everything, give it to the poor…and then follow me.”
There is nothing valuable that will not require letting go of something. Consider those in love and willing to drastically change their lifestyles because the other person completes them, and it’s worth it.
Jesus’s invitation is understood under the light of Martha and Mary. When Martha, flustered, scolds Jesus for not telling Mary to go and help her, Jesus clarifies: “Only one thing is important, and Mary has chosen the better part.”
Have you chosen the better part?
