A Note from the Pastor – 3rd Sunday of Advent

John the Baptist, the greatest among those born of women, suddenly questioned Jesus: Is it you? Or should we wait for someone else? He expected someone rowdy and iron-fisted, and Jesus exudes mercy and understanding, even toward fierce opponents.

Like John, there are times when my way is not God’s way; you pictured angels slaying your enemies, yet Jesus calls you to forgive, love, and walk another mile.

Meanwhile, John the Baptist waits by the window for hail and fire; he is surprised to learn that Jesus is patient and loving with the weak, while renewing the strength of lepers, the blind, and the disabled, but where is the sinner’s punisher? Jesus is recreating them like clay with mercy and compassion; God’s hands create the best Adam and Eve.

Then Jesus asks, “What did you go to see in the desert?” A good speaker? A crowd pleaser? A charismatic leader? Perhaps a reed swaying in the wind? An opportunist who bends over backwards to please his audience? What did you go to see? A man wrapped in fancy clothes?

No, you witnessed John the Baptist’s integrity, love for God, and justice, never self-aggrandizement; the light of his ministry consisted less of him, more of God.

Do you remember when humility guided you while making people feel appreciated? Don’t let your prophetic voice fade away.
You are not strong when you fight, but when your prayers lift others to goodness. Go back to being a prophet; the light is within you.
