Dear Parishioners,
I would like to share with you…
Letter from St. John Eudes
On Trust in Times of Destitution (1659)
“I think constantly of you and your needs, but I cannot doubt that our most bountiful Father and our admirable Mother will show their generosity in this time of crisis. They will not abandon their poor children, my dear friend, however unworthy and unfaithful we may be at times. No, no, no, heaven and earth would sooner come to an end.
Think of how He lavishes gifts on us all, even blasphemers and atheists, those who do not acknowledge His existence or His love. Would he, therefore, abandon His own true children? Impossible! It is utterly impossible! We have but one thing to fear, and that is to become so fearful that we lack confidence in God.
The needs emerging in these days are urgent, but I trust that help is not far away. As for me, I am sparing no effort or endeavor to do all I reasonably can in this matter. With the help of God, I shall do so without haste or worry and without believing that my effort is all that can be relied upon. Do as much on your part.
Above all, I urge you to ensure that God is well served and honored through faithful and prompt obedience to all legitimate orders and rules… Know, my dearest friend, that in observing them and encouraging others to do the same, you will be doing something very pleasing to Our Lord and His most holy Mother. This is how their blessings come to us and our community. ‘Cast your burdens on the Lord and He will take care of you’ (Ps. 55:23).”
[The underlying attitude in this letter of trust in times of trial, however, is a treasure of our spiritual heritage that can guide us in any situation. This is one of many letters from St. John Eudes preserved in a book called In All Things, The Will of God.]
